Ferreira do Alentejo is one of the municipalities in the district of Beja, located in the Baixo Alentejo region. It currently has about 8255 inhabitants in four parishes (Alfundão and Peroguarda, Ferreira do Alentejo and Canhestros, Figueira dos Cavaleiros and Odivelas), in a total area of 648,249 km2.
Popular tradition states that around the fourth century, in the area where the village of Ferreira do Alentejo stands today, there was an exuberant and prosperous Roman city called Singa. This city, however, would be attacked, around 405 A.D., by barbarian peoples, the Suebi and the Goths, who would have been stopped by the bravery of a valiant woman. This woman, the wife of a blacksmith, is said to have defended the castle gate with two mallets.
This fact, which to this day brings us some doubts and which has not yet been scientifically confirmed, gave an image to the Coat of Arms of the village in which a woman appears with a mallet in each hand.
