The hydrographic network is marked by the basins of the Sado and Mira rivers, the latter that crosses the municipality longitudinally in its narrowest part, in the vicinity of Fernão Vaz/Castro da Cola. The Monte da Rocha dam and a significant part of the santa clara dam regulf are two important water sources that mark and characterize the landscape and human activities in the region.

In terms of vegetation, the cereal steppe predominates, mounted and, in the southern part of the municipality, the busiest relief, given the approximation and integration in the mountains, it is affirmed the covered mediterranean characteristics and the pine forest.
The foundation of Ourique dates from 711, the year of the entry of Muslims into the Iberian Peninsula. However, several factors point to a more indented existence.
Several population settlements have been known since prehistoric times, sites documented by various archaeological campaigns. Since the Paleolithic, Chalcolithic, Iron and Bronze Age, a large number of peoples have crossed these lands due to proto-historical, Roman, Celtic and Arab presences.
As for the origin of the toponym Ourique, it may originate from the words Gold (by proximity to gold explorations) and Orik (Arabic word meaning misfortune or misfortune, following the Moorish defeat at the Battle of Ourique).
