Located to the northeast of Terceira Island, 5 kilometres from the county town, Praia da Vitória, the village of Lajes, Lageas, Lagens, or Lages, as it was called in other times, is one of the most notable parishes (recently elevated to Village) not only on the island of Terceira, but in the Azores in general.
With about 5000 inhabitants, this community thus becomes one of the most populous in the Archipelago and its entire history is marked by particularities and facts that end up making it stand out from the others, even by the broad aspect of the plain that has so little to do with most of the Azorean landscape.
Partly due to its natural qualities, Lajes has always been marked by the wealth of its residents and by the fact that many nobles lived there to the point that the parish was called 'The Madrid of the Azores'.
Its extensive fields supplied the entire island, and it was also given the name of Celeiro da Terceira. There are also records of the production of a large quantity of fruit and some wine, and it is not too much to emphasise, if only as a curiosity, the fact that a considerable quantity of silk was produced.
Where once there was cereals, today there is a colossal work of engineering carried out by the British, Americans and Portuguese: Air Base No. 4, well known to everyone. This, as it could not be otherwise, is today the main responsible for the dynamism and progress of the parish.
The village of Lajes rests on a very fertile valley, where among the green of the landscape embroidered with the grey of the stone walls that divide it, there are the imposing manor houses with masonry bars, recalling the existence of the wealthy crops that brought prosperity to the traditional families of that area.
