House to recover in a quiet area of the parish of Vila Nova, Praia da Vitória. Vila Nova is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, with 1678 inhabitants spread over 7.96 km2 according to the last population census carried out in 2011. The importance of other times is still felt today. The parish of Vila Nova remains one of the main ones in Ramo Grande, in particular for the cultural manifestations it presents.
It is a parish with a great abundance of water, in 1891 there were 14 fountains. It was an area of great grain production. It is characterised by a rocky and high coastline and a vast bay that houses the Escaleiras Swimming Pool. It is famous for the feasts of the Divine Holy Spirit.
A place of great wealth and abundance of resources, this parish has always been a privileged place for the establishment of wealthy and influential people such as Pero Pinheiro, Maria Homem, Diogo Barcelos, Manuel Afonso Drumond, João Pires das Calles, among others. Due to the characteristics of its relief and the fertility of its soils, cereals and pastel were cultivated here on a large scale. It was at the beginning of the settlement, one of the places where the most intense commercial activities took place, as there were many merchants of goods, blacksmiths, locksmiths, farriers, carpenters, weavers and shoemakers. Fishing activity was also frequent, such was the abundance of fish on its coast.
Its elevation to an independent parish is unknown, however historians claim that it was prior to 1482. It was then, as already mentioned, one of the first parishes on the island, possibly, at the same time as Santa Bárbara, São Sebastião and Praia.
Also noteworthy is the devotion to the Holy Spirit, which in this parish finds its maximum exponent on the island. Manifestations in praise of the Holy Trinity have long been linked to the population of this locality. On Bodo Sundays, when the festival is at its peak, the awning cars are still concentrated in the centre of the parish, with colourful and cheerful colours, keeping alive the tradition that dates back to the beginnings of this cult in the parish.
