It is located about 5 km northwest of the city centre of Angra do Heroísmo, in the southern part of the island of Terceira, being one of the few Azorean parishes considered inland, that is, whose territory does not border the coast of the island.
Integrated in the suburban belt of Angra do Heroísmo, it was curacy of the parish of São Pedro de Angra until it was elevated to parish by charter of King D. João VI, dated September 6, 1825, although its municipal bodies were only delimited and installed by charter of the Civil Government of Angra of November 26, 1835.
The parish of Terra Chã occupies a flattened territory, hence the toponym,[1] irregularly shaped, without defined natural limits, located at the base of the slope of Serra do Charcão, a designation locally given to the southwestern slope of the Caldeira de Guilherme Moniz massif. Without reaching the coast, it is bordered to the south by the parishes of São Mateus da Calheta and São Pedro de Angra; to the west, northwest and north by the parish of São Bartolomeu dos Regatos; and to the northeast and east by the parishes of Posto Santo and Santa Luzia de Angra.
